Why is Japan having trouble? Why is Russia? Why is India? Because they’re xenophobic. They don’t want immigrants.

That was Joe Biden at a May 1 fundraiser. White House mouthpiece Karine Jean-Pierre claimed Biden was saying that “we are a nation of immigrants,” and only making a “broad comment” about Japan and India. As the American allies doubtless noted, Biden has not made a similar criticism of Iran, a major adversary and not exactly a magnet for immigrants.

Biden may have been imitating Hillary Clinton, but as Paul Johnson noted in Modern Times, the “phobia” charge goes back to Freud, the first to charge that those who disagreed with him were somehow mentally deficient.

Perhaps Freud made that argument, but that's not where Biden and the Left get its "-phobia/-phobic" tactic. That's straight out of the Marxist/Leninist and especially Stalinist playbook, where dissent from the party line is considered evidence of mental illness. The use of the epithet "transphobic" to characterize those who insist on following biology, for instance, is a marginalization tactic rather than an argument -- because the Left has no real arguments. They have feelings. And that makes this tactic a profound case of projection, really.
